Chinese President Xi Jinping commenced an official state visit to the United States on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 23), touching down at Joint Base Andrews alongside his wife, Peng Liyuan. In a rare diplomatic gesture, US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump personally welcomed the Chinese delegation on the tarmac, accompanied by a 21-gun salute and the playing of both nations’ national anthems.
Upon his arrival, Xi conveyed strong confidence through a written statement that China and the United States, as two major global powers, can discover the right path to coexist peacefully in the new era. He stressed that 2026 marks a pivotal year for the long-term development of both countries.
The Chinese president highlighted the prior consensus reached with Trump during the US president’s visit to China in May, which centered on forging constructive bilateral relations backed by strategic stability. Xi described that mutual understanding as a foundational strategic guide for advancing ties moving forward.
Xi urged both sides to align their efforts in the same direction to nurture stable relations. He emphasized that genuine cooperation should serve as the mainstream focus, balanced with healthy and appropriate competition, manageable differences, and the shared realization of predictable peace.
