Global technology leaders Huawei and Qualcomm have officially announced a comprehensive, multi-year patent license agreement. The high-profile deal centers on cross-licensing each company’s patent portfolios across essential tech pillars, including 5G, compute, artificial intelligence (AI), and networking.
Under the terms of the agreement, Qualcomm is also set to acquire selected Huawei U.S. patents spanning compute, AI, networking, and related advanced technologies. The entire transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and will conclude upon receiving necessary regulatory approvals.
Both tech giants emphasized that the agreement aligns strictly with fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles, underscoring a joint commitment to protecting intellectual property rights and fostering sustainable industry innovation.
John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing, highlighted that this deal reaffirms industry recognition of Qualcomm’s foundational 5G technology leadership and the global success of its 5G standard-essential patent (SEP) licensing program. He added that the agreement equally reflects Qualcomm’s respect for Huawei’s continuous innovation across 5G and broader technological fields.
Alan Fan, Huawei’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, noted that decades of sustained fundamental R&D have cemented Huawei’s leadership in mobile communications—most notably its contributions to 4G and 5G standards, including near-physical-limit signal transmission technologies via polar codes. Fan affirmed that the partnership validates the immense value of Huawei’s innovation portfolio while recognizing Qualcomm’s foundational contributions to modern communications.
