China Railway reported a historic single-day peak as millions took to the tracks for the annual Golden Week holiday. Rail passenger trips reached 25.2 million on October 1, the opening day of the seven-day National Day holiday running from October 1 to 7, setting an all-time record for daily passenger volume.

Momentum carried strongly into the second day, with passenger traffic projected to reach 20.39 million trips on October 2. To accommodate the massive travel surge, railway operators added 1,462 passenger trains across the national network.

Advance booking data identified China’s major urban centers as top origin and destination hubs. Major departure points included Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Xi’an, Zhengzhou, and Nanjing. The primary arrival hubs closely mirrored departures, with Chengdu, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Nanjing, and Changsha ranking among the most visited cities.

Among the busiest transit corridors were the Xi’an–Chengdu round-trip route, alongside connections linking Beijing to Shenyang, Zhengzhou, and Qingdao. Railway departments nationwide implemented enhanced operational measures to maintain safety and passenger convenience across the network.

Over the broader travel period spanning both the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday (September 23 to October 8), total rail passenger journeys are projected to reach approximately 284 million.
