Malaysia LNG Group of Companies (MLNG) reaffirms its vision to become a global leader in liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, prioritizing reliability and sustainability. The company is unveiling its strategic plan to transform into an “Intelligent Plant” to meet the rapidly increasing energy demand and adapt to the evolving global energy market.
Challenges and Adaptations in the New Era of the LNG Market
Laga Jenggi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of MLNG Group of Companies, shed light on the rapidly changing landscape of the LNG market, particularly the shift from traditional 20-year long-term sales contracts to more popular short-term agreements. This presents a significant challenge for producers who must make substantial investments in infrastructure.
Nevertheless, MLNG remains committed to meeting regional and global energy demands, especially in key markets like Japan, China, and Korea. The company is also exploring opportunities to expand its customer base to neighboring Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Vietnam to foster energy interdependence within the region.
Laga emphasized LNG’s crucial long-term role, even with the ongoing push for cleaner energy. Global energy demand remains high, and a complete transition to alternative energy sources requires significant time, investment, and effort.
“The LNG business is about reliability. We must be able to continuously supply energy to our customers throughout the year,” Laga stressed the importance of consistent energy supply, especially during winter when energy demand peaks.
“We must leverage technology and innovation, including automation and AI, to enhance efficiency and compete with newer, more efficient plants,” Laga added, outlining the direction of technology investment to maintain competitiveness.
Investing in Technology to Build the “Intelligent Plant” for the Future
MLNG initiated a “5G” project last year to elevate its digital capabilities within the plant. This involved establishing a Private 5G Network to support employees transitioning from paper-based work to fully digital operations using tablets and digital systems for data recording, inspection, and uploading.
“We are considering implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the future to further enhance operational efficiency,” Laga stated, anticipating that these technologies will automate processes and significantly boost efficiency.
Beyond digital transformation, MLNG has also installed “IoT” (Internet of Things) smart sensors on various motors to monitor their operational status and is utilizing Machine Learning to optimize production processes. A dedicated task force has been established to develop digital and technical solutions, ensuring the plant operates at its full potential with maximum automation.
Sustainable Maintenance and Expansion
MLNG’s LNG plant, operational for over 40 years, stands as a testament to its continuous commitment to maintenance and improvement. Mr. Laga noted that since the first LNG shipment on January 13, 1983, MLNG has consistently grown and developed. Today, it boasts over 15,600 employees and celebrates key operational milestones.
MLNG’s production capacity expansion has been gradual, allowing for continuous development of its workforce. MLNG personnel are globally recognized, with experts from MLNG contributing to LNG production facilities worldwide.
In terms of sustainability, MLNG consistently prioritizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company introduced 46 electric vehicles (EVs) last year, which have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by an equivalent of 100,000 tonnes. Furthermore, MLNG imports clean energy for its operations, with approximately 70% of the energy used sourced from hydropower, significantly reducing its fuel burden.
Laga concluded by stating that LNG remains the cleanest fossil fuel currently available and is affordably priced compared to other alternative fuels. MLNG believes that investing in the rehabilitation and maintenance of existing plants is cost-effective and the most suitable option in the current situation.
