Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation and TSMC have signed a definitive agreement to establish Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, a joint venture located in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The new entity will serve as a primary hub for developing and manufacturing next-generation image sensors for smartphones, with volume production expected to commence in 2029.
Sony will hold sole controlling interest in the joint venture, operating it as a consolidated subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation and appointing its Representative Director. Capital contributions will be implemented in phases based on market conditions, with Sony contributing approximately 465 billion yen through cash and asset transfers via a company split, while TSMC will contribute roughly 282 billion yen in cash. Additional investments required to achieve planned production capacity are currently being evaluated with potential financial support from the Japanese government.
Under the strategic collaboration, Sony will lead product planning, product design, and core image sensor technology development. TSMC will supply its advanced manufacturing process technologies and fabrication expertise to facilitate mass production. The partnership aims to accelerate the commercialization of advanced image sensors tailored to evolving customer demands while strengthening overall manufacturing capacity.
The finalization of the transaction remains subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. This binding agreement formalizes the preliminary partnership framework previously announced by both companies in May 2026.
