Apple’s next-generation professional laptop is shaping up to be one of the most substantial hardware refreshes in years. Recent industry reports indicate that the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring touch-enabled OLED displays will not only introduce interactive glass panels to the Mac line, but will also arrive with a substantially lighter and thinner chassis.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has successfully engineered a lighter build by miniaturizing internal parts and strategically reorganizing internal components. This hardware optimization marks a noticeable reduction in carry weight compared to current models, where the 14-inch version starts at 3.4 pounds and the 16-inch flagship reaches 4.7 pounds. The redesign is also expected to adopt a slimmer profile and replace the traditional display notch with a Dynamic Island interface.
Under the hood, Apple is reportedly outfitting the touch-enabled OLED models with its proven high-end silicon—the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips—rather than waiting for next-generation M7 silicon expected in 2027. Internal validation is already underway, with machines spotted running test builds of macOS 27.2, an operating system update anticipated for public rollout around late October.
This product shift highlights Apple’s reinvigorated design focus under Chief Executive Officer John Ternus, whose engineering background has prioritized physical craftsmanship and streamlined industrial aesthetics. Positioned above standard professional laptops, this premium touch-enabled tier could even launch under distinct naming, such as “MacBook Ultra.”
Regarding release timing, Gurman projects that Apple could officially introduce the touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro as early as October, with the window potentially extending into November alongside the debut of an OLED-equipped iPad mini.
