Thailand faces a critical environmental challenge as the nation generates roughly 700,000 tons of electronic waste annually, with less than 1% entering proper treatment facilities. This bottleneck leaves hazardous substances at risk of contaminating ecosystems through improper disposal and open dismantling.
In response, advanced telecommunications provider AIS has joined forces with the Pollution Control Department (PCD) and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), or TGO, to launch the “E-Waste Calculator Platform.” The system serves as Thailand’s first unified platform applying international calculation principles to systematically collect data, measure carbon reductions, and monitor e-waste management nationwide.
The platform is designed to convert raw operational data into actionable sustainability metrics. Organizations can register collected e-waste types and quantities via https://sustainability.ais.co.th/th/sustainability-projects/e-waste-calculator/overview. The engine automatically computes total waste volume alongside estimated greenhouse gas emission reductions based on verified scientific criteria. Users can export comprehensive reports in PDF and Excel formats to track environmental performance, plan disposal strategies, and streamline corporate sustainability reporting. At the national level, this aggregated data equips policymakers with evidence-based insights to improve resource recovery.
The initiative merges technological infrastructure, policy direction, and climate standards. AIS provides digital solutions and network scale, PCD steers regulatory advancement and take-back frameworks, and TGO establishes calculation integrity.
From a regulatory standpoint, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, through PCD, is advancing the draft Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Management Act anchored in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principles. Connecting data through the platform enables PCD to trace mobile devices and accessories from drop-off points to certified recyclers, improving local governance cooperation and advancing the circular economy.
Concurrently, TGO has established Thailand’s first calculation methodology for greenhouse gas reductions derived from sorting end-of-life mobile phones for recycling under the Low Emission Support Scheme (LESS). This framework delivers transparent and verifiable measurement criteria, with future development targeting carbon credit methodologies under the T-VER program to incentivize corporate participation.
The platform builds directly on AIS’s long-running “Thais Say No to E-Waste” initiative. Since 2019, the program has mobilized over 280 partner organizations and 3,200 collection points nationwide, collecting a cumulative 1,301,912 items weighing 288,346.74 kilograms, and abating approximately 130,700 kilograms of carbon equivalent (kgCO₂e).
AIS, PCD, and TGO invite public agencies, private enterprises, and institutional partners to adopt the E-Waste Calculator Platform at https://sustainability.ais.co.th/th/sustainability-projects/e-waste-calculator/overview. By integrating institutional e-waste metrics into a unified reporting standard, participating organizations can accelerate national recycling rates while advancing Thailand toward becoming a regional benchmark for sustainable e-waste governance across ASEAN.
