Thai Union Group (TU), the global seafood leader, has announced a major commitment to improving labor welfare by installing Wi-Fi on partner fishing vessels. This initiative aims to connect the “heart of the industry”—the fishers—to their families and support systems, targeting 75% coverage for tuna vessels in international waters by 2028.
Thai Union is advancing its SeaChange® 2030 sustainability strategy by prioritizing the well-being of those behind its quality seafood products. Recognizing that fishers often spend extended periods at sea, the company is implementing high-speed satellite communication to ensure workers remain connected to their communities, an essential human right that enhances mental health and safety.
The mission outlines a clear roadmap for tuna vessels in international waters:
- By the end of 2026: Achieve 50% Wi-Fi installation across partner fleets.
- By the end of 2028: Increase coverage to 75%.
Adam Brennan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Thai Union Group, stated that on the 10th anniversary of SeaChange®, “People” remain the core of the company’s success. He emphasized that digital connectivity is a “game-changer” for transparency and worker empowerment, providing fishers with easy access to grievance mechanisms and vital information.
“The installation of Wi-Fi is a significant step in improving the quality of life for workers at sea,” Brennan noted. “By bridging the communication gap, we are not only supporting our workforce but also setting a new industry standard that demonstrates how technology can drive ethical practices and supply chain transparency.”
Despite technical complexities and satellite coverage limitations, Thai Union is committed to demonstrating the feasibility of this model. This initiative serves as a blueprint for the global seafood industry, proving that a holistic approach—caring for both the “community ecosystem” and the “marine ecosystem”—is the only path toward a truly sustainable future.
Through this decade-long commitment to SeaChange®, Thai Union continues to lead by example, ensuring that its growth is built upon ethical recruitment, fair treatment, and respect for human dignity across all operations.
